Instance Sizing & Cost Optimization
Graviton2 Coming Soon: ARM64 (Graviton2) support is planned for future releases, offering 20% better price-performance than x86 instances. Currently, all instance types are x86_64 architecture.
Recommended:
- t3.medium - Best for most users
- t3.small (minimal testing)
Specs:
- 2 vCPUs
- 4 GB RAM
- 50 GB Storage (gp3)
- ~$53/month (EC2 + EBS + CloudMapper)
Recommended:
- t3.large - Recommended
- m5.large (high performance)
Specs:
- 2 vCPUs
- 8 GB RAM
- 50 GB Storage (gp3)
- ~$83/month (EC2 + EBS + CloudMapper)
Recommended:
- m6i.large - High performance
- m5.xlarge (very large)
Specs:
- 2-4 vCPUs
- 8-16 GB RAM
- 50 GB Storage (gp3)
- ~$118/month (m6i + EBS + CloudMapper)
- Enterprise-grade performance
AWS Compute Savings Plans
- 1-year commitment: Save up to 42% on EC2 costs
- 3-year commitment: Save up to 66% on EC2 costs
- Applied automatically to eligible usage
- Flexible across instance families and regions
Example: t3.medium at $30/mo → $17/mo with 3-year Savings Plan
Reserved Instances
- 1-year Standard RI: Save up to 40%
- 3-year Standard RI: Save up to 72%
- Locked to specific instance type + region
- Best for predictable, long-term workloads
Note: Savings Plans typically offer better flexibility than RIs
Pro Tip: Combine Compute Savings Plans with right-sized instances to maximize savings. A t3.medium with a 3-year plan costs ~$13/month (vs $30/month on-demand).
